What the Friday?

What the Friday!

  • I heard that Michael Jackson is bringing in more money than another other dead person.  What the Friday!
  • Why does it feel like the kids in driver's education classes put more pressure on themselves to pass the written part of the test than an actual school test?  What the Friday?
  • I saw this bumper sticker last night:  There is only 1 God.  Quit applying for his position!
  • Tonight is the last Friday Night Lights for our high school team.  Then we are on to Basketball and Pep Band.
  • What kind of candy do you pass out for Trick or Treat?  My kids picked out all these sour things and Jolly Ranchers.  What the Friday?
  • I hate dressing up in a costume for Halloween.  I do not even like helping my kids decide what to wear.  So now, Daughter is going to a costume birthday party.  What the Friday!
This is another busy weekend.  Tonight is football.  Tomorrow, Daughter and I are getting hair cuts, then a little shopping, cleaning and then a band quarter auction for me, Foxy and Son and the party for her.  Sunday is church, trick or treating (we are just passing out candy), and Daughter spending time with boyfriend and his friends.   Have a great weekend!

Tasty Thursday

I am praying that this is the last crazy busy week.  We had so much going on.  Daughter & Son had marching band Monday, & Thursday.  Daughter had driver's education.  Tonight is the last night of it, and she is worried about passing the test. Doctors appointments, church, choir, and that is just through today.

Friday is football.  Saturday, Daughter and I are getting our hairs cut.  Foxy is working on the truck, Son is helping with a haunted trail, and Daughter and BF have been invited to a costume birthday party.  Foxy and I have been invited to the neighbors for a party and the Band is having a Quarter Auction.  So I need to come up with some quick easy meals. Here is one of our favorites.  I got it out of the Taste of Home magazine several years ago.

Pasta with Peppers and Sausage

Ingredients

  • 12 ounces uncooked spaghetti
  • 1 package (14 ounces) smoked turkey sausage, cut into 1/4-inch slices
  • 2 medium green peppers, julienned
  • 2 medium sweet red peppers, julienned
  • 1 medium onion, halved and thinly sliced
  • 2 cans (14-1/2 ounces each) diced tomatoes, undrained
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 6 to 8 drops hot pepper sauce
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup Progresso ® Chicken Broth

Directions

  • Cook spaghetti according to package directions. Meanwhile, in a Dutch oven coated with cooking spray, cook and stir sausage until lightly browned. Add peppers and onion; cook and stir 2 minutes longer. Stir in the tomatoes, garlic, pepper sauce, paprika, salt and cayenne; cook until vegetables are tender.
  • Combine cornstarch and broth until smooth; add to sausage mixture. Bring to a boil. Cook and stir for 2 minutes or until thickened. Drain spaghetti; toss with sausage mixture. Yield: 6-8 servings.
It really isn't hot or anything.  Just yummy!

I am excited and going to go to McDonald's this weekend because...the sign says "The McRib is back!"  I have no idea why, but that is my favorite item on their menu.  And they don't serve it often enough.

Well enjoy the pasta dish and have a great day!

Wacky Wednesday

Yesterday, Son went to the Orthopedic Doctor.  It's been a month since he had seen him.  The doctor didn't remember him.  Now, I understand that the doctor sees a lot of patients.  But there is a folder with (I hope) lots of information on Son.

The doctor asked where Son's brace was.  (Last time, the doctor told him not to wear it everyday.)
He told Son that he can try out for basketball, and he can wear the brace for just practice and games.
The doctor stated that he just needed physical therapy because he has chicken legs.  Not quite sure what that means, but, okay.

In other news, Daughter has one more day of driver's ed.  That is tomorrow night.  She takes a written test and is trying really hard not to be nervous about taking it.  Then she waits until after Thanksgiving to drive with an instructor.  She needs eight hours of driving time.  So we have about another month to practice and then she can try for her license in December.  How exciting!

Sad news:  A newborn Rhino (born yesterday), passed away last night.  It had trouble breathing and the zoo keepers couldn't keep him breathing.

A co-worker just told me that the storms that hit here yesterday literally split her street sign and stop sign in two.  WOW.

Weekend Update - SYTYCD

We had such a great weekend!  My poor daughter is exhausted and we are trying to nurse her throat back to health, but everyone else is doing well.  Son is back to his almost normal self.  He text me Friday around 2:30 pm and stated that he had not had any pain meds all day and he wanted to go watch the football game.  So we went.  He sat with me almost the whole time, and we watched the Hornets just run over the other team.  The band invited the 6th graders to play pregrame with them.  It almost doubled the band!

Saturday, we did some running around, cleaned and Daughter went with the band to Springfield for a band festival.  They didn't get home until just before 1.  Then she got up and went to church.  I didn't let Son go, because I was worried he might get overly tired, and he wasn't going to play or dress anyway.  So we stayed home.  I dozed until Daughter go home.

Sunday we had church, then I sent Daughter to bed for an hour or so.  Then me and four kids went to Columbus for the So You Think You Can Dance Tour 2010.  It was amazing!  I saw my favorite dancers and dances.  We had so much fun.

Miss Varsity, Son, Miss Dancer, & Daughter

I loved this stage!

This is Allison & Kent.  He is from O-H-I-O and the crowd was deafening everytime he came on the stage.  He was amazing!

It was a late night, but totally worth it.  Now things should calm down.  But we did get some cool news.
Foxy's sister, her hubby, daughter, son & his wife will all be with us for Thanksgiving.  Our niece is an actress out of NYC and has gotten a part in a dinner theater in Indianapolis.  Our BIL is willing to pay for all of us (the whole family) to go to Indy the day after Thanksgiving to see her opening night!  How exciting is that?  There will be more to come on that, I tell you!

Have a great Monday!

What The Friday!

Here is my observations for this week...

  • Hey America!  Dancing With The Stars is a dancing competition with stars.  You got it wrong on Tuesday.  What the Friday!
  • The doctor who did Son's surgery told us he could go back to school the next day if he felt like it.  Well it's Friday, and Son is still on pain meds, his face is still puffy and he is still sleeping a lot.  Apparently the doctor has not had this surgery done to him before!  What the Friday?
  • Well the firewood is still piled in the back yard.  We have now decided to bring it up and put it on the front porch.  Good idea, Foxy!

  • We had a company meeting yesterday.  There are 70 employees, 60 of which are electrical/mechanical/structural engineers, designers and architects.  The technical part of the meeting last over an hour and the 10 of us who were sitting there with them got really bored!  Why did we have to do that?  what the Friday?
  • We finally had our first frost warning.  I just looked outside and there was no frost on the Edge...yet.  What the Friday?
  • So got his new Kings Island Season Pass.  He also got a free ticket to get into KI's Fearfest for free.  He paid for it himself and I am proud of him for that.  He is using the money he got from mowing Gpa's lawn.
So my weekend will consist of Friday Night Lights, GO HORNETS!, then staying with Son tomorrow.  Sunday, I hope he is well enough to go to the So You Think You Can Dance Tour in Columbus.  We are so excited.  There will be pictures on Monday, for sure!  What are you doing this weekend?

Tasty Thursdays

Our church is no exception to great cooks.  My aunt is one that makes great desserts.  Her Hummingbird Cake is yummy!

Hummingbird Cake

2 cups Flour
3 Eggs, beaten
1 tsp. Salt
1 tsp. Cinnamon
1 (8 oz) crushed Pineapple
1 cup chopped Pecans
2 cups Sugar
1 cup Oil
1 tsp. Baking Soda
2 tsp. Vanilla
2 cups chopped Bananas

Beat eggs, add sugar, oil and vanilla.  Add flour, salt, soda and cinnamon.  Stir until moist (do not beat).  Stir in pineapple, nuts and bananas, and bake at 325 degrees for 1 hour, using a Bundt pan.  Cool and remove.

Cream Cheese Frosting:  Mix 1 (8 oz.) Cream cheese, 1/2 cup Butter, 1 tsp. Vanilla, and 1 box (1 lb.) Powdered Sugar.  Frost the cake, add chopped nuts.  Refrigerate for 24 hours.

It will add a nice touch to any meal.

Wacky Wednesday

I am just getting to this post.  We have had medical issues around here.

Son had his septoplasty yesterday (his nose).   He is such a good kid.  He sees Gdad and says "Hi, Kid."  Like he is older than my dad.  He had the nurses in stitches last night.  He would talk to anyone and loved to make us all laugh.  He had a huge breakfast which almost made him not have the surgery.  They told him to eat whatever he wanted before 7:15 am.  So he makes Foxy get up and cook him a huge breakfast of eggs, bacon, ham and cheese.  They had to wait the eight hours or more to take him to surgery.  But, some other person having surgery did almost they same thing, so we had to wait on them first.  But everything went well, until the ride home.  That's when his nose started bleeding.  It's just the drainage, but Ewww!  That is gross. So he will get tomorrow off school and then go back on Friday.

Daughter may have a broken toe.  Had to take her for an x-ray yesterday morning.  Just found out her toe is okay!  Whew!  Dodged that bullet.

I had a root canal today.  The numbness has worn off, so the aching has started.  My dentist is a nice guy.  I've known him most of my life.  He and my mom graduated high school together.  His daughter and I were in school together.  I've let him do more to my mouth than any other person.  That sounds wrong, doesn't it?

When I was in third grade, I had a bike accident and my front tooth, root and all came out.  I did a wheelie for my Grandpa and wrecked.  All we can figure is that when I came down, I hit so hard that I flipped the bike head over and the handle bar hit my lip and knocked the tooth out.  It was the day before the Beverly Hills Country Club tragedy in northern Kentucky.  I remember that because my dentist was there that night.  My dad had to call him and tell him about me.  Dad put the tooth in salt water and we brought it to him the next morning.  He said it slid right into the open whole.  He put this cement across the tooth and the two on either side of it.  I kept it for eight years.   Then I let him take out my wisdom teeth.  I trust him more than anyone.  Dr. Bob even gave me money for ice cream that day.  Gotta love that!

So I went to see him because my molar was hurting, especially when I had anything cold in my mouth.  He looked and xrayed and found a fracture just above the root base.  O goody.  The tooth was dying.  So today he drilled, pricked, tugged, kept saying "open wider" , and filed.  Then the assistant decided that maybe one of the files may have broke off in my mouth.  So they stopped and took an x-ray.  Thank goodness they were wrong!  But now, seven hours layer, my mouth hurts.  I've taken some Ibuprofen, but it is just barely taking the edge off.  I want to just put my head back and go to sleep.  But I can't.  I am at work and have to go to choir practice tonight.  But I think Daughter will drive me.  Should be fun...

Weekend Update...

What a weekend!  I am still tired.

Friday, we had a good time at the game, even though they lost.  The band did great!  We went out to Waffle House after the game.  This is becoming a habit.

Saturday, Foxy and I got up early and went and got the log splitter.  We spent all morning splitting.  The back of my legs are sore from the work, but we got the majority of it split.  It was such a great day to split.  Too bad the pictures haven't come through yet.  We will be very warm using our potbellied stove this winter.

Son went to Kings Island's Fearfest.  He said it was better last year.

Daughter and her boyfriend went to her BFF's birthday party.  She was running barefoot to the bathroom and her boyfriend was running behind her.  She stopped, he didn't and stepped on her big toe.  The nail bled and is lifted up some.  The toe is bruised on top, on the outside and some underneath.  It is very painful to walk on.  We have it wrapped up, but it still bleeds from the nail.  She is using a crutch.

Foxy took me out for dessert for Sweetest Day.  Nothing fancy.  It was the thought that counts.  We were both very tired from splitting wood and being out late the night before.  I had cheese cake and he had apple pie.  Yummy.  It was very sweet of him.

Sunday, Foxy worked, Son was with his friend, and Daughter and I went to church.  We had lunch there and then we went to Walmart, got  shirts and came home.  Daughter and one of her friends, Miss Dancer, decorated their shirts for the So You Think You Can Dance tour we are going to next Sunday.  We've been counting down to each other for weeks now.  We are very excited to see Kent Boyd and Billy Bell and even Lauren Froderman.  But really can't wait to see Dominic, Twitch and the others.  It will be awesome!

Well, another busy week is ahead of me.  Hope to see you all around.

What The Friday?

It's Friday!  That means What the Friday!

  • Last night on the way home from the store, Daughter and I saw a terrible accident.  Traffic was back up, Aircare helicopters were called in.  I later learned that one of the drivers was killed.  I pray for the family.
  • I think my tooth ache is getting worse everyday.  I am now waking up in the middle of the night and taking Ibuprofen.  Yuck!
  • Tomorrow, Foxy, Son and I are splitting wood.  We have to get up early to go get the splitter and try and get it all done tomorrow.  Should not be a problem and a beautiful day.  It's hard work, but will be rewarding for the winter!
  • Last night, Daughter and I did a little shopping.  I found this...

Isn't it cute?  Sorry the light in the bathroom is bad, but it's a short-sleeved orange hoodie with a olive green undershirt I added for color.
  • I love Friday because I get to wear jeans to work.
  • I did a random act of kindness this morning.  I got to work waaayy to early, so I ran over to Panera Breads for a free pastry.  Mmmm.  Anyway, I decided to buy a baker's dozen bagels and cream cheese for the office.  Now everyone wants to know what the occasion is.  It's just because I wanted too!  What the Friday!

So tonight, The Hornets play the Lumberjacks in FNL (Friday Night Lights).  Tomorrow we are splitting wood and Daughter has a party to go to.  Sunday, Foxy has to work so he can be off for Son's surgery next week and we have church, a dinner and football!

So what's your weekend gonna be like?

Tasty Thursday

It actually rained here in SW Ohio last evening.  There was even thunder and lightning.  The wind blew the rain all around, the trees are probably less some dry, brittle leaves.  We haven't had a thunder storm in months.  We haven't had rain in months.  The last I heard is that we are down seven or eight inches in the water table.  Now the weather is total fall; cool, breezy and in the 60's as a high.

So cooler weather makes me think of soups and chowders.  I found this recipe and made it (with modifications) and everyone in my family loved it!  Thanks to allrecipes.com for this.

LOADED POTATO SOUP

8 Potatoes, peeled and cubed
1/2 cup Butter
1/2 cup All-purpose Flour
8 cupsMmilk
1/4 cup chopped Onion
1 (8 oz.) container of Sour Cream
1 - 1 1/2 cups shredded Cheddar Cheese
Salt and pepper to taste

Boil potatoes and onion, in just enough water to cover until soft.

While potatoes are cooking melt butter in a sauce pan over med.-high heat. Whisk in flour until smooth, then gradually stir in the milk. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium, and simmer for 10 more minutes, or until slightly thickened.
Stir flour mixture into the potatoes (most of the water will have evaporated or cooked out). Cook 5 more minutes. Stir in sour cream and cheese until melted and blended. Season to your liking.
*I used mozzarella cheese and I used more of it (like another cup). I also added dill and I added cubed ham to it.

It was so good that it is going in my green recipe notebook.  It was simple to make and a big family pleaser for all of us.
It was yummy!

Wacky Wednesday

This morning, Gpa took Son up to the doctor to have his pre-surgery physical.  For those of you who didn't know, in August, Son broke his nose.  They did surgery and put it back in place, but the septum was still poking out to one side.  So next Tuesday, he will have a septoplasty performed.  They will slit the piece of nose in the middle, pull it back and take the mis-aligned cartilage out.  Sounds like fun, huh?

Son is starting to get nervous about it.  This morning, he and I went through what to talk to the doctor about.  He asked if Doc was going to check for a hernia (you know, turn your head and cough).  I told him, well since the surgery is in his head, I doubted that the doctor would check below his waist.

We also talked about the anti-inflammatory meds he is on.  He can take Acetaminophen, but not the prescription for his knee from now through about three weeks.  I wrote all this down for him to talk to the doctor about.  I then told him to call me on the company land line when he is finished.  So what do I get?  A text that says..."It is a go."  I am assuming that means everything was talked about and is fine for next week's surgery, but...He is thirteen.
